Observation/Reflection #3: A Matter of Style
  • During this visit, you should work with one or more groups of students if you haven't already, and observe your teacher doing the same. For this journal entry, describe your teacher's teaching style. What type of relationships with students does he or she nurture in his or her classes? How do students perceive that power is distributed in the classes? Does this vary within or across the different classes the teacher has? Cite examples from your observations to support your inferences. Remember to reflect on what style of teaching you will gravitate toward and the how you want to be perceived by your students.
The CT in the middle school is definitely the boss of the room and holds her students to a high standard. There is not much interaction among students or with the teacher. She gives lecture based instruction and at times will make a joke. I observed one class in particular where only one table ‘got’ the joke and it was this sort of unspoken connection between those four students and the CT. Ms. M rarely has discipline problems and I think it’s due to her consistency in style and treatment of students. Her classroom is a place of learning and working in small groups to accomplish certain goals. I think the relationship most nurtured here is one of reciprocal respect and academic rigor. She expects the students to carry themselves as dignified 8th graders on the verge of young adulthood and treats them that way.
In collaborative classes, the power is still clearly distributed to the two teachers. There is little variation among classes. I see it as the same show run 5 times a day and differs little among audience.
Reflection:
I am naturally a gregarious person with a lot of energy and I bring that to the classroom. I am sure this will change as I enter the profession, but I would like to foster more substantial relationships in the classroom. I want to know my students so I can best provide them with the necessary and appropriate practices. I want to lead students to answers, not give it all to them. I hope my style can be described as energetic, at times unorthodox, consistent, fair and challenging. I hope my students will perceive me as a little weird, tough and fair and approachable.
